Exploring Beyond Basic Backgrounds | AECP Level 2 – Class 1

Published on 24 March 2026 at 12:43

Hello crafty friends!

Today I’m sharing my projects for AECP Level 2, Class 1: Beyond Basic Backgrounds by Lydia Evans. This class introduced several creative ways to add more interest and depth to card backgrounds, and it encouraged me to step outside my usual techniques.

What I learned

In this class, I explored different techniques to enhance backgrounds:

  • Water bleaching to create soft, magical effects
  • Repeating stamped patterns with clean spacing
  • Inlaid die cutting for a striking, dimensional look
  • Foiling techniques to add shine and texture

I especially enjoyed discovering how much impact these techniques can have while still keeping the design balanced.

My cards

For this assignment, I created two cards, each focusing on different techniques from the class.

Card 1 – Foiled geometric background

For my first card, I wanted to create a repeating pattern with lots of shine and dimension. I used small diamond shapes to build a geometric design and covered foam pieces with foil flakes to enhance the depth.

Instead of using foil as a small accent, I let it become the main feature of the background. I combined this with a softly ink-blended ombré background to balance the bold shine of the foil.

To finish the card, I added a foiled sentiment, some delicate gold thread, and a few iridescent gems to emphasize the shape and add extra sparkle.

Card 2 – Inlaid die cutting with soft texture

For my second card, I focused on inlaid die cutting to create a clean yet detailed background. I combined white and softly ink-blended pink elements with a gold outline to add contrast and elegance.

I added subtle splattering for extra texture and interest, while keeping the background calm and balanced.

As a focal point, I used florals with gold embossing and soft ink blending, paired with a vase and small embellishments for a finished, cohesive look.

Reflection

This class really encouraged me to experiment more with my backgrounds and to see them as an important design element rather than just a base.

I especially enjoyed working with foil in a more prominent way and exploring the precision of inlaid die cutting. Both techniques pushed me a little outside my comfort zone, and I would love to continue exploring them in future projects.
