From Poppies to Prairie Roses

For my flowers, I reached for the Craft-A-Flower Prairie Roses Layering Die Set.

The large red flowers were the obvious stars of the card, but I didn't want the design to become too heavy with only red and green. So I added a few small, very light flowers as well. They bring some softness and balance to the stronger colours.

To colour the flowers and leaves, I used ink smooshing rather than traditional ink blending.

And I have to say... I had so much fun doing this! 😄

I love the unpredictable variation you get with ink smooshing. Instead of every petal or leaf having exactly the same colour, each piece develops its own little variations and texture.

That worked beautifully for the vintage feeling I wanted.

I also used the Creative Cuts Houseplants Layering Die Set and took a few leaves and three small flowers from it.

The leaves were coloured with the same ink-smooshing technique.

For the small flowers, however, I kept things much lighter. I added a very subtle brown edge using Earthy Embrace Fresh Dye Ink to give them a slightly aged, vintage appearance.

I really like how these little flowers disappear into the arrangement in some places and come forward in others. They aren't there simply to fill an empty space — they help create balance.

Creating the Vintage Background

For the background, I used a piece of patterned paper from my stash.

I didn't want it to remain completely flat and clean, though, so I ink-blended around the edges to give it more definition and help it fit the vintage feeling of the card.

I did the same with two Nesting Arches.

The arches create a subtle frame behind the floral arrangement, and by giving their edges some extra colour, they stand out much more from the background.

For the upper arch, I added the Lattice Blossoms Stencil with Iridescent Glitter Relief Paste.

This adds both texture and a little sparkle, but I deliberately kept it subtle. Most of it disappears behind the flowers, with only little hints of glitter peeking through here and there.

And I think that's exactly what I wanted.

Not everything on the card needs to shout for attention. 😊

A Little Wax Seal

For the finishing touch, I made my own wax seal using the With Love Wax Seal Stamp.

I used the cosmic berry wax for the text and pearl white wax for the rest of the seal.

I love how this little detail adds to the vintage character of the card. It almost feels as if this floral panel could have been an old piece of stationery or a beautiful letter from another time.

The birthday sentiment was added to the centre of the floral arrangement, keeping it small enough that it doesn't compete with the flowers.

Putting Everything Together

One thing I really tried to keep in mind while making this card was:

Does this element actually add something?

The flowers, the extra foliage, the arches, the patterned paper, the texture paste, the glitter, the wax seal — I wanted every part to contribute something to the finished design.

I didn't want to stop after adding the three large red flowers just because the card already looked pretty.

Instead, I kept looking at the composition and asking myself what it needed.

Sometimes that meant adding something.

And sometimes it meant stopping. 😄

I think that is one of the things I enjoy most about making cards: the little decisions along the way can completely change the feeling of the finished project.

My Thoughts

I absolutely loved making this card.

It is definitely a little different from some of the cards I normally make, but I really enjoyed the vintage feeling, the layers and especially the ink-smooshed flowers and leaves.

And I think the moodboard was a wonderful starting point.

The red poppies inspired the colour palette and the feeling, but the finished card became something completely different — and completely mine.

That's what I love about inspiration challenges. You don't have to recreate what you see. Sometimes one colour, one flower or one little detail is enough to send your creativity in another direction.

And this time, that direction happened to be vintage flowers, soft little blossoms and a handmade wax seal.
