Hello crafty friends!
Sometimes it's simply fun to spend an afternoon learning from another card maker, and that's exactly what I did during a wonderful workshop taught by the talented Ishani, a Certified Educator.
If you've ever watched one of her classes, you'll know exactly what I mean when I say she's incredibly enthusiastic, cheerful and full of creative energy. She has a wonderful way of explaining techniques while making everyone feel relaxed enough to simply enjoy creating.
For this workshop we focused on coloring with alcohol markers, creating two cards from one die-cut shape.
Trying a Different Coloring Style
Normally I blend my alcohol markers much more to create very smooth transitions. This time, however, I wanted to follow Ishani's approach. After all, that's one of the reasons I enjoy taking workshops—to learn different ways of working instead of always doing things my own way.
It was really interesting to discover that alcohol markers don't always need extensive blending. Leaving some of the marker strokes visible creates a beautiful illustrated look with plenty of character.
The Altenew Artist Markers were wonderful to work with. Their rich pigmentation made layering colors easy, and I especially enjoyed adding a little yellow into the pink/red flowers to give them extra warmth and depth.
Making the Designs My Own
Although I followed Ishani's workshop, I didn't own the same floral set she used, so I chose Altenew's Build a Garden: Serene Blooms instead.
I also replaced the arch die with an oval die from Spellbinders and added my own wax seal, splattering and details to personalize the designs while keeping the overall concept of the workshop.
The two cards beautifully demonstrate how the same floral images can create completely different moods on a soft white background and a bold black background. Funny enough this add to my previous blog, about my last AECP class.
Sometimes changing just one design element is enough to create an entirely new feeling.
