Looking Beyond the Focal Point | Two Creative Christmas Card Ideas with Altenew

Hello, crafty friends!

Sometimes, the best inspiration comes from looking at your supplies in a different way.

When I started creating these two Christmas cards, I challenged myself to use products differently than I normally would. Instead of letting the main images become the focal point, I asked myself a simple question:

What if the focal image became part of the background instead?

That simple idea inspired both of today's cards.

Card 1 – A Hidden Winter Visitor

For this first card, I used the beautiful Christmas trees from the Holiday Adornments set to create a soft winter forest instead of a single stamped image.

Rather than making the deer the star of the card, I wanted it to become a little surprise. At first your eye is drawn to the large layered poinsettia and the elegant decorative frame. Only when you take a second look do you discover the deer quietly standing behind the frame, surrounded by snowy trees.

I love creating little details that invite someone to look just a little longer.

Card 2 – Turning Bows into Pattern

For the second card, I challenged myself again by using the bows from the Holiday Adornments set as a repeating background instead of decorating a package or focal element.

Because the background already contains quite a lot of visual interest, I wanted the focal point to bring balance. The layered Stained Glass Medallion, softly coloured with white, silver and a touch of light pink, became the perfect centrepiece. Adding festive greenery instantly transformed the design into a warm Christmas card while allowing the ornament to remain the star.

I enjoy how completely different these two cards feel, even though they both started with exactly the same creative challenge.

Sometimes all it takes is looking at a stamp set from a different perspective to discover completely new possibilities.

I'd love to know...

Have you ever used a stamp or die for something completely different than it was originally designed for?
