This month, I created two cards for the Altenew Inspiration Challenge. The beautiful combination of soft pinks and fresh greens immediately made me think of encouragement cards. The colours became my starting point, but as I started designing, another idea began to take shape.
Instead of creating two completely different cards, I challenged myself to explore how one floral design could evolve into two unique projects while keeping the same elegant style.
Card 1
The first card became an oval-shaped card with a hidden surprise inside. I wanted the card to have a little extra dimension without turning it into a shaker card. Because I also wanted it to stand beautifully when displayed, I created a simple stand on the back instead of trimming the bottom edge of the oval.
When the card is opened, more sentiments appear inside together with a small wax seal, creating a little surprise for the recipient. I also repeated the soft pink cardstock on the inside, giving the card a finished and cohesive look.
Card 2
For the second card, I kept the traditional 5×7-inch format but wanted to continue the oval theme in a different way. This time, the oval became part of the layout instead of the card shape itself. I kept the design clean and let the floral arrangement remain the focal point.
Both cards were created using the coordinating layering stencils from the Build-A-Garden: Blossoming Trio set. Interestingly, the flower petals and leaves only have a single stencil layer. Instead of seeing that as a limitation, I embraced it because it creates wonderfully soft dimension. The ink blending naturally gives the flowers depth without making them look heavily shaded. I also added an extra colour to the lightest parts of the petals to create a little more interest and variation.
Sometimes a challenge starts with a colour palette, but the most enjoyable part becomes discovering where one simple idea can lead. These two cards reminded me that exploring different ways to use the same elements often results in designs that feel connected while still having their own personality.
I hope they inspire you to look at your favourite stamp sets and dies in a new way and see how one creative idea can grow into something completely different.
