A few weeks ago, I joined a workshop by Ishani, and I finally finished the card I started there. Sometimes workshop cards take a little longer to make their way from the “I started this” pile to the “finally finished!” pile. 😂
Ishani’s original design had two beautiful hydrangeas with a butterfly in between them. I loved the idea, but there was one tiny problem: I didn't have a hydrangea die.
So… I improvised.
I had colored a piece of watercolor cardstock with pink and blue watercolor. The colors blended beautifully, and once I added the ink, they turned into all those lovely lavender variations.
And instead of hydrangeas, I used flowers from my Craft-A-Flower: Forget-Me-Not Layering Die Set, die cut them from this watercolored cardstock and layered them together to create my own version of the flower.
And honestly, I really like how that turned out. It gives the card a slightly different look while still keeping the feeling of Ishani’s original design.
This card is also much fuller than I would normally make it. I usually like giving my elements a little more room to breathe, but this time I decided to keep the fullness of the original design.
There was a good reason for that.
I made this card for a crafty friend who absolutely loves butterflies, and I wanted to make her something that felt like a big, colorful bunch of happiness. So for this card, I wasn't trying to make it fit my usual style. I was making it especially for her.
And I think that is something I am learning more and more: inspiration doesn't always mean changing everything until it looks like me. Sometimes it means keeping what works, changing what I don't have, and knowing why I'm making the choices I make.
Ishani's workshop gave me the starting point, and the forget-me-not flowers and a whole lot of layering made it mine.
And yes… this card is definitely full.
But sometimes a card for someone special is allowed to be a little extra.
